GLHU «Verhnedvinsky foretry enterprise» is formed on 29 September, 1960. It was first called Drissensky forestry enterprise. From 7 January, 1963 it is renamed into Verhnedvinsk forestry enterprise. The enterprise is territorially located in a northwest part of Vitebsk region in territory of Verhnedvinsk and Polotsk administrative districts. The greatest extent of territory of the forestry enterprise from the North to the South is 70 km., from the West to the East - 60 km.
It consists of 9 forestries, a woodworking shop, a garage, and management personnel. The quantity of working people is nearly 400 people in summer, 380 in winter (seasonal workers leave for autumn and winter).
The total area of the forestry enterprise is 103 795 hectares. The area, covered with wood is 91 546 hectares.
The following equipment belongs to the forestry enterprise: - 42 motor vehicles; - 26 tractors; - 35 motorcycles.
- Wood planting, taking care of the wood, laying-in of wood, sawing of saw timber, realization of wood and saw timber.
Natural, climatic and forest conditions
According to the forest division into districts of the territory of the republic, forestry enterprise forests are a part of a subzone of broad-leaved and fir forests(oaky-coniferous) of Western-Dwin forest district and they are also a part of a complex of Polotsk large forests. A climate of the forestry enterprise area is rather warm, damp. The mid-annual temperature is +5,2 0С. In the warmest months (June-July) the average temperature is +17,6 0С, and in the coldest months (January-February)–7,0 0С. The absolute temperature minimum was -37 0С, and an absolute maximum was +36 0С. The vegetation period lasts 185-190 days, begins on 15-17 April, and ends on 17-20 October. The period of active vegetation (with the temperature above + 10 0С) is 132-142 days. Average date of the first autumn frosts is 29-30 October, of the last spring frosts is 6-13 May. Average depth of soil freezing is 50-55 sm. Amount of precipitation per year is 588 mm, and for the warm period is 420 mm.Average relative humidity of air is 70 %. Prevailing winds are both western southwest. Northern and northeast winds are more often in spring. In the whole, environmental conditions are quite favorable for the growth of the basic forest breeds: pine, fur-tree, birch, aspen, black alder. Speckled alder is also wide-spread in the given conditions of the district. On the other hand, the reduction of the heat provision of the vegetative period causes insignificant distribution of an oak and others deciduous breeds.
Relief and soils
The relief of the forestry enterprise has a rather fresh print of the Valdai (Vurmsky) glacier. Moraine hills and ridges complicate the relief which has a glacial lacustrine and aquatic glacial origin here.
The height above the sea level is from 160 to 190 m. Strongly pronounced relief causes a sharp change of breeds in rather small territories. If on relief heights pine forests are developed, then in depressions fir groves grow.
On transitions from heights to upper bogs mixed and deciduous woods are wide-spread a birch and an aspen are a part of them.
Specific features of the relief, some diversity of parent and breeds, a variety of humidifying modes define complex combinations of soil-forming processes.
As a result of soil forest typological inspection of the territory of the forestry enterprise, made by 1st Minsk forest-making expedition in 1988, the following types and subtypes of soils are allocated.
In present borders of the forestry enterprise soil forest typological inspection is made on the area of 66461 hectares.
In the surveyed territory of the forestry enterprise cespitose-podsolic soils prevail (44,6 %). They are wide-spread in all the parts of the forestry enterprise and dated to average the middle and low parts of the slopes and the lowered elements of the relief.
The forestry enterprise territory is characterized by a developed system of the rivers and the streams, concerning a river basin Western Dvina. According the density of a river network the district is high on the list in the republic. On each square kilometer of the area there is more than a semi kilometer of a river stream.
The largest waterway in the territory of the forestry enterprise is a river Western Dvina, concerning, according to the regulations, to the big rivers of the republic. The river Wetern Dvina flows from the East to the West in the Southern part of the forestry enterprise and is a natural border of Borkovichsky, Verhnedvinsky and Bigosovsky forestries with Disnensky forestry enterprise. On all extent it has a narrow and deep profile of a valley without the developed inundated terraces and rather a rapid current. Width of the river is 100-120 meters, average depth is 1,5-3 m, speed of a current is 0,4-0,7 km/s. Many rivers and streams, the majority of which flow in the wood fund of the forestry enterprise, fall into the river Dvina. The most considerable of them are the rivers Drissa, Svolna, Sarianka, Uzhitsa, Svatitsa, Rositsa.
The important role in the general system of a hydrological network is played by the lakes which are the regulators of the general drain of water. There are more than 25 of them in the borders of forest tracts. They are concentrated, basically, in Ignalina, Osveisky and Strelkovsky forestries, settling down between moraine hills and ridges.
Lake Osvejsky is the second largest lake in Belarus. Its area is 53 km2. Average depth of the lake is 2 m, maximum depth is 7,5 m. Length of the reservoir is 11,4 km. Maximum width is 7,8 km. There is a big moraine island with the area about 500 hectares closer to the west coast.
